Long piece by Chuq von Rospach for The Guardian:
Even two years after I left Apple, I still feel like I celebrate two Christmases: the one I celebrate with my family, and the one in January that we celebrate when Steve Jobs gets up on stage and says: “I have a few things to show you today that I think you’ll really like.”

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Software, Odds and ends, Apple, Developer

Way back in June of 2007, I wrote
this post, a list of five things Apple could do to bring gamers back to the Mac. I said that Apple should put more games on iTunes, break out the gaming hardware, go casual, and make the experience worth it, from buying to download to playing.
Now, a year and a half later, Apple has basically done just that -- with the App Store. There are casual games aplenty, the iPhone works great as a gaming device, and the App Store itself makes it relatively easy to find new games to buy. There are kinks, of course, that need to be worked out, but no one can say the App Store
isn't a gigantic success.
And so, Dennis Sellers of MacsimumNews asks, is it time
for a Mac App Store? We have an App Store for your Mac already -- it's called the Internet, where you can see reviews, download software, and even get updates for the programs on your Mac. In fact, Apple already
has a downloads page that looks very much like the App Store's front page, though there's no place there were you can easily see what apps you currently have installed, or what apps you have that need updating. It would work like a Software Update, but for every app you've got.
There are lots of benefits, too, the first being that more apps would be sold. Of course, the usual Internet channels would remain open; Apple would just offer a service very similar to the App Store, in that you'd have a
program on your computer that would easily
add and/or update all the
apps you have installed. But would a Mac App Store experience the
same price issues that the iPhone's App Store has? It is an interesting idea, though -- the App Store has done very well for both Apple and developers so far, and it might be helpful to look at what works there and how it might be able to come back to the Mac platform at large.

No, not the Edge network from AT&T, but a rather unique app from
Mobigame that uses the motion sensors of the iPhone and some powerful animations to make for a unique gaming experience. Looking a bit like something out of the movie
Tron, Edge allows you to control a cube through several hazardous environments and traps that get more and more complicated as you move along.
The best way to get an idea of what the game looks like is with this
YouTube video Mobigame has posted. Edge has been available on other platforms like the Sony Ericsson handsets, but it will debut on the iPhone and iPod touch next week. There are 26 different mazes to navigate, using the iPhone touch screen and accelerometer.
Edge has been nominated for several gaming awards in Europe and has the potential to be a major hit on the iPhone/iPod touch. We'll be anxious to try this one ASAP.

A few months ago,
Mark/Space delivered
Fliq for iPhone, a free utility for sending contacts and photos to other iPhones and iPod touches that are also running Fliq. Later, they shipped
Fliq for Mac, a US$19.95 application goes beyond the capabilities of the iPhone app by providing an easy way to move photos, contacts and notes from your Mac to any Mac or iPhone on your Wi-Fi network.
There are several free or low-cost utilities that perform similar tasks, most particularly
10base-t interactive's
DropCopy and
Mobile DropCopy. The latter is a new iPhone app that, like Fiiq and Fliq for Mac, facilitates transfer of non-DRM data between iPhones and Macs. Since news of both of these apps appeared in my inbox on the same day, I decided that a faceoff was in order. So how do these apps compare, or am I comparing Apples and oranges? I think you'll find that they're similar in operation, but different in what they mean to accomplish.
Read on to see how they fare in a TUAW faceoff!Continue reading TUAW Faceoff: Mark/Space Fliq for Mac vs. Mobile DropCopy

Roald Bradstock is
a champion javelin thrower, but lately he's been throwing more than that, including an egg, a golf ball, and
a soccer ball. You know when people start breaking random things in creative ways, an Apple product will show up. Sure enough, in the video above (turn the sound down, the wind noise is horrendous), Roald tosses an iPod a football field and a half.
There's no reason why he should do this, but it looks like Apple expected this might happen some day -- despite a mess of mud and grass, the iPod is apparently no worse for the wear. You might say it's silly, you might say it's not impressive, but then again: could you do it?
And if you do, could you post it on YouTube, too?

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Apple, Developer, iPhone, App Store, iPod touch

The nominations are out and voting has begun for the "Best App Ever" awards for 2008, recognizing the best iPhone and iPod touch apps of the year. Nominations have already happened -- the public submitted almost 18,000 nominations, and a panel of developers and experts was assembled to finalize the choices. You can
vote right now over on the website for the winners in categories like "Best App Ever," "Best Musical App," and "Most Creative Use of IPhone Hardware" all the way down to "Best Word Game."
Quite a list of choices. Voting ends on January 6th (so get started testing those apps if there are some in here you've never heard of), and the winners will be announced next week at Macworld Expo.
Unfortunately, the App Store changes so fast and is so varied that some of the most useful apps (
SnapTell Explorer is in for the hardware award, but it's missing on the "Most Useful" list) are
not on the list in favor of more popular or well-known apps (
Weightbot is a great app and very well done, but "Most Innovative"? And you know how I feel about
Ocarina). Still, as a popularity contest, it'll be fun to see what comes out as the winners, and I can guarantee that in all of the many categories presented, there are a few really great apps that will come to your attention for the first time.

Update: most of these deals end soon, so act fast in order to get them!
Some
iPhone developers have come together to offer you discounts on their
App Store applications, just in time for the New Year. The
New Year's App Blowout hopes to spread some "holiday cheer" by offering some discounts on iPhone apps.
Some of the apps being offered up at a discount include:
Some apps are being offered completely free, so now is the time to get in on these deals. Visit the

Seth Weintraub:
I’ve heard that iMovie will largely (if not entirely) be a Web Application and Apple would offer its users to “upload your movies to us and edit them there.”
Sure, iMovie as a web app. Uh-huh. Slogan: And you thought USB was slow.
Weintraub has also reported that the iWork ’09 apps are going to be web apps too. (I like how, when linking to the one and only report of iWork-suite-as-web-apps, which is his own report, that he says the move is “largely believed”.)
There may well be a germ of truth in here — some sort of online web-based document viewing/editing for iWork document formats (tied to MobileMe, perhaps?). But the idea that these top-line iWork and iLife apps are going web-based strikes me as impossible. The whole appeal of the iWork suite is that the user experience is extremely polished; nothing web-based comes even close to the polish of iWork ’08 today. The way Apple stays ahead of the web app trend is by creating native Cocoa experiences that can’t be duplicated in web apps — both on the Mac and iPhone.

It hasn't been all roses for
MobileMe. After a rocky start in 2008 things have started to
settle down in MobileMe land, and it appears that Apple is about to add at least one feature that was promised when the service rolled out.
Loyal TUAW reader Dave has noticed a little change on the
Apple MobileMe page that says the ability to easily make large file transfers is coming soon. The hint is on the lower right of the page:
Soon a new feature in iDisk will make it simple to share files too big for email. iDisk will automatically send a message with a simple link. The recipient will just click the link to download the file.
As it is now, you can place things in your public folder,
and other Mac or PC users can see that folder if they know your MobileMe user name. You can also give out your password (not a great idea), allowing others to cruise your private folders, then drag and drop large files to their own desktops. Users can also send files to you the same way.
Other solutions have stepped up to fill in for the feature, like
FileChute which works very well. Apple isn't giving a date, but the fact that the feature is on the way should give some New Year's cheer to MobileMe subscribers everywhere.
Addenda: Some readers say the message has been there for a few months, so don't get too excited that this feature is imminent. It is, however, greatly desired.

While everyone was assuredly watching the ball drop in in NYC and finishing off glasses of bubbly, the iPhone Dev-Team was hard at work pushing out the iPhone 3G unlock. They previously
stated that an iPhone 3G unlock would occur in the final hours of 2008, and though the unlock was made available a few hours in to 2009 it is currently being released as a beta.
The 0.9 beta release of "yellowsn0w" does still have some noted
issues, but a big feature worth noting is that the unlock will work with the latest modem firmware (02.28.00). In other words, if you have an updated iPhone 3G at version 2.2, it is possible to unlock your iPhone without having to exploit holes only found in previous versions of the firmware. Even though this release is dubbed a "beta" reports are pouring in at the Dev-Team
blog of success stories.
For more details, issues and experiences (positive or negative) head on over to the Dev-Team blog. While this intrepid blogger will be passing on the unlock, if you have any luck trying this out, let us know in the comments.
Thanks to everyone who sent this in!TUAWiPhone 3G unlock (finally) crashes everyone's party originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 01 Jan 2009 11:45:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Phillip “The Swanni” Swann, in his predictions for 2009:
In 2009, dismal sales of Net TV set-tops will turn into non-existent sales, no matter how many different ways the products are promoted. So, I predict that Vudu will close its doors in 2009 and Apple’s Steve Jobs will finally call it quits on his least favorite hobby, Apple TV.
Predicted same thing last year. And in 2007.

With just under a week left before
Macworld 2009, the rumor mill is turning out many rumors. One new rumor, proposed by
9to5 Mac, suggests that Apple may be taking their iWork suite of software online.
iWork is Apple's answer to an office suite, and combines a word processor (Pages), presentation software (Keynote), and spreadsheet app (Numbers).
Just as Apple took mail, calendars, and contacts online with
MobileMe, 9to5 believes they might do the same with Pages, Keynote, and Numbers. Apple definitely wouldn't be the first company to take office applications into the "cloud," but they might be the first to make web apps that tie into MobileMe.
Google Docs (formerly Writely),
Zoho Office, and
Microsoft are just a few of the companies currently offering web-based solutions for office products.
